This painting was painted of Laurel Mountain during a winter sunset from a rising hill above Belington, West Virginia. The sun was low on the horizon creating shadows stretching across the crusted snow and the red hue of the winter sunset hitting the opposing hill side with the last of the suns rays. The cold dry air has higher elevation clouds with a brisk west to east wind.
Painted primarily with a brush the trees in the middle ground are scratched in with a palette knife.
